Propagating trees by air layering is a simple process that can be done at home with a few basic supplies. This method is preferred for propagating fruit trees, as the new tree will be genetically identical to the parent. In addition, air layering is less stressful on the tree than some of the other propagation methods. We’ll show you how it’s done!

Air Layering Instructions:

First, you’ll need to choose a healthy branch on the tree that is at least a year old. Cut a notch about six inches from the end of the branch, taking care not to cut all the way through. Next, make a second cut perpendicular to the first one, forming a T shape. Gently pull the bark back and insert some moistened sphagnum moss into the cuts. Be sure to pack it in tightly so that it will stay in place.

Now you can either wrap the area with plastic wrap or place the branch in a plastic bag. Make sure to secure it tightly so that the moss doesn’t fall out. Finally, water the branch well and place it in a shady spot. In a few weeks, you should see new roots beginning to form!

Once the roots are several inches long, you can cut the branch below the rooted area and pot it up. Air layering is a great way to propagate fruit trees, as it guarantees that the new tree will be identical to the parent. With just a little patience, you can have a brand new tree started in no time!
