If you’re like most people, you probably overwater your plants. You might think that the more water you give them, the better off they’ll be. But this isn’t actually the case! In fact, overwatering can kill your plants. The key to watering your plants properly is to focus on the root zone and only water when needed. We’ll go over some tips for watering your garden in this blog post.

“Even if your plants are thirsty, don’t drown them!”

When you’re watering your plants, it’s important to focus on the root zone. This is the area where the roots are located. The roots are what need access to water, not the leaves. If you’re only watering the leaves, your plant isn’t getting the hydration it needs to thrive.

View of buildings on the coast of tropical island San Andres y Providencia

You should also only water your plants when they need it. There’s no need to water them every day. In fact, this can actually be harmful to your plants. Watering too often can lead to root rot and other problems. It’s best to check the soil before watering to see if it’s dry or not.

When you do water your plants, make sure to water deeply and thoroughly. This means giving them a good soaking so that the water reaches the roots. It’s also important to water in the morning. This allows the plant to absorb the water before it evaporates in the hot afternoon sun.

English Harbour, Hurricane Hole

Another important tip is to mulch everything. Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil and prevents evaporation. This is especially helpful during hot summer days.

Finally, make sure you’re using the right tool for watering your plants. A garden hose with a spray nozzle is best for most plants. If you have potted plants, a watering can or self-watering system may be a better option. By following these tips, you can ensure that your plants are properly hydrated and healthy! Thanks for reading!

If you’re looking to get a head start on your spring garden, then you’ll want to plant some of the easiest vegetables to grow from seed.

“With so many easy-to-grow options, there’s no excuse not to start your spring garden today! “

The Home Garden Seed Association compiled a list of the top ten easiest plants to grow, and beans, peas, and pumpkins made the cut. So did cucumbers, zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, lettuce, radishes, and squash. Keep reading for information on all of these easy-to-grow seeds!

View of buildings on the coast of tropical island San Andres y Providencia

Lettuce is one of the best vegetables to grow in spring. The leafy greens thrive in cool weather and can be planted as early as two weeks before the last frost date. You can sow lettuce seeds directly in the ground or start them indoors and then transplant them outside later.

Brassicas, which include broccoli, cabbage, and kale, are another group of vegetables that do well in spring. The seeds of these plants can be sown directly in the ground or started indoors. Spring radishes are another great option for direct seeding. Just remember to thin out the seedlings once they’ve sprouted so that they have enough room to grow.

English Harbour, Hurricane Hole

Legumes, such as beans and peas, are also easy to grow from seed. These plants do best when the seeds are sown directly in the ground. Basil is another easy-to-grow herb that can be direct seeded or started indoors. The seeds of this plant should be sown about ¼ inch deep in the soil.

Summer squash, such as zucchini and yellow squash, is another vegetable that’s easy to grow from seed. The seeds of these plants can be sown directly in the ground or started indoors and then transplanted later. Cucumbers are another good option for direct seeding. Just remember to provide them with some type of support, such as a trellis or fence, so that they can climb.

With so many easy-to-grow options, there’s no excuse not to start your spring garden today! Just choose the seeds you want to plant and get started. Before you know it, you’ll be harvesting fresh vegetables that you grew yourself.

Do you have a favorite easy-to-grow vegetable? Let us know in the comments below! And be sure to check out the Home Garden Seed Association’s website for more information on growing your own food.

Happy planting!

If you’re like most people, you probably think of composting as a way to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills. And while that is certainly a valuable benefit, composting also has another important purpose: improving the quality of your garden soil.

“soil amendments like compost and manure to build soil improve its structure, provide nutrients and promote healthy plant growth!”

In this blog post, we will discuss how to prepare garden soil for planting, and some of the best soil amendments for vegetable gardens. We’ll also show you how to make your own soil amendments at home!

View of buildings on the coast of tropical island San Andres y Providencia

One of the most important things you can do for your garden is to add organic matter each year during soil preparation. This will help build and maintain the health of your soil. Be sure to turn all plant material under the soil – this includes leaves, straw, and grass clippings. If you’re adding organic material before planting a fall garden, be sure it is well-rotted, such as compost.

Before planting, rake the soil clean and level it. This will help ensure that your plants have a good foundation and are able to take root easily. Once you’ve done this, you can start adding some of the following amendments:

– Compost: Decayed plant materials such as vegetable scraps.

– Leaf mold: Decomposed leaves that add nutrients and structure to soil.

– Aged manure: A good soil conditioner.

– Coconut coir: A soil conditioner that helps soil retain water.

English Harbour, Hurricane Hole

Adding these amendments to your garden soil will help improve its quality and provide a better foundation for your plants. If you’re not sure where to find these amendments, many garden centers and nurseries carry them. You can also make your own compost at home! Simply collect your kitchen scraps (vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, eggshells, etc.) in a bin or bucket with a tight-fitting lid. Add some water and stir occasionally, and within a few weeks, you’ll have homemade compost to use in your garden.

We hope this blog post has given you some helpful tips on how to prepare garden soil for planting. Remember, adding organic matter and amendments to your soil each year is the best way to maintain its health and improve plant growth. Happy gardening!

If you’re looking for plants that are low maintenance and thrive on neglect, you’ve come to the right place! In this blog post, we will discuss a variety of plants that can survive in even the most challenging conditions. Whether you have a busy lifestyle or you just don’t have a green thumb, these plants are perfect for you!

“If you’re looking for an indoor plant that is both low-maintenance and stylish, look no further!”

First on our list is the aloe vera plant. This succulent is native to Africa and is known for its ability to thrive in hot, dry climates. Aloe vera is a popular choice for indoor plants because it doesn’t need much water or sunlight to survive. Simply give it a little water once a week and place it in a sunny spot, and it will be happy!

View of buildings on the coast of tropical island San Andres y Providencia

Next on our list is the ZZ plant. This unusual-looking plant is native to Africa and gets its name from its zig-zag-shaped leaves. The ZZ plant is very tolerant of low light conditions, making it perfect for rooms that don’t get much sunlight. It’s also a drought-tolerant plant, so it doesn’t need to be watered very often. Simply give it a little water once a week and it will be happy!

If you’re looking for an indoor plant that is both low-maintenance and stylish, look no further than the snake plant! This tall, slender plant is native to Africa and gets its name from its snake-like leaves. Snake plants are very tolerant of low light and neglect, so they are perfect for busy people or anyone who doesn’t have a green thumb.

Did you know that there is a type of gardening that is in harmony with nature? Permaculture gardeners strive to create a natural balance in their gardens, using techniques like companion planting and crop rotation. They also make use of natural resources, like rainwater harvesting and composting.

“Give it a try – your plants (and the planet) will thank you!”

If you’re interested in learning more about this type of gardening, keep reading! In this blog post, we will discuss some ways to garden naturally, using the principles of permaculture.

View of buildings on the coast of tropical island San Andres y Providencia

One way to garden in harmony with nature is to use human power instead of machinery. This means using your own two hands (or a hand tiller) to do the work, instead of relying on gas-powered machines. Not only is this better for the environment, but it also gives you a great workout!

Another way to work with nature is by planting trees. Trees provide shade and homes for wildlife, help to improve air quality, and can even help reduce noise pollution. If you have the space, consider planting a few fruit trees as well – you’ll be able to enjoy fresh, homegrown fruit in addition to all of the other benefits that trees provide.

When it comes to fertilizing your plants, organic methods are best. This means using compost or manure to provide nutrients, rather than chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers can pollute the environment and harm helpful organisms like worms and bacteria that live in the soil.

If you have a lawn, you might want to reconsider it from a permaculture perspective. Lawns are high-maintenance – they require regular mowing, watering, and fertilizing. You might be better off planting a low-maintenance ground cover instead. Or, if you love the look of a green lawn, consider planting a meadow garden full of native wildflowers.

English Harbour, Hurricane Hole

In general, try to reuse and recycle materials whenever possible in your permaculture garden. For example, use fallen leaves as mulch, or repurpose an old wheelbarrow as a planter. And speaking of planters, you can also create them from recycled materials like tires or pallets.

There are many free resources available to help you get started with permaculture gardening. Look for books at your local library, or search for online articles and tutorials. Permaculture is all about working with nature, so get outside and start exploring! See what plants are growing in your area, and learn which ones would be best suited for your garden.

Finally, remember that not all plants will thrive in every climate. Make sure to choose plants that are well-suited to the conditions where you live. If you’re not sure what will work in your area, ask a local nursery or gardening center for advice.

By following these permaculture principles, you can create a garden that is beautiful, sustainable, and in harmony with nature. Give it a try – your plants (and the planet) will thank you!
